I believe narrowing down her struggle and working one-on-one with her on this with activities that have proven to improve sight word recognition along with phonological awareness improved this area of struggle. This student’s reading comprehension continued to improve from December to June as well, which I now know is in direct relation to her sight word improvement. The result was improving from 105 correct words in the winter, to 123 words in the spring. McKenna and Stahl’s book helped me to target this student’s exact need, along with providing specific activities to help target this weakness and helped me to focus on a few sounds and patterns that she was struggling with. I was only doing small drills and helping her memorize before reading this text. I had been working with this student (whose data is provided) one-on-one on her ability to identify sight words. I finished reading Assessment for Reading Instruction 2nd edition by McKenna and Stahl before I wrapped up my spring testing. If they miss a significant amount of words than I know I need to work on strengthening this area in small groups with them. This helps me to identify how each student’s ability to read sight words is. Reading these words should be automatic and easy, enabling students to focus on only unknown words in a text. Students in these grade levels are 7-8 years old. I have students read each list of words to me and circle the words that each student gets incorrect. Building upon the previous list, the second set of words is generally mastered during the first and second-grade years.
